With an eye towards the future, the Tulsa Zoo partnered with Selser Schaefer Architects to develop an entry Master Plan to encompass the entire visitor experience. The thoughtful interconnection of spaces — interior, exterior, architecture, and landscape — creates an integrated and immersive visitor experience unique to Tulsa.

The design is influenced by and emersed in the natural world. Whimsical tree-like elements provide shade and strengthen the nature-inspired experience while a large roof overhang identifies the entrance gates and provides relief from the sun. Oklahoma native landscaping and natural stone elements create a transition from the surrounding park to the zoo inside.

cost-effective solutions

With most of the property located within a floodplain zone, new additions were strategically planned to create cost-effective solutions.

An expanded parking area incorporates sidewalks, crosswalks, landscaping, and branded elements, as well as separation of passenger, bus, and delivery vehicle circulation to provide both safe and experiential pedestrian navigation.

Entry points include an access bridge that coordinates with pedestrian routes.

The main entry gate incorporates large plaza spaces to comfortably accommodate groups of visitors and provide “selfie” opportunities both outside and inside the gates.

Stadium seating is integrated within the landscape, inviting visitors to sit down and enjoy the view while they picnic.
